Denison and OGT expand Taroom Trough footprint
Qld partners target faster domestic gas supply
- 50:50 joint venture secures 1,069 sq km exploration area 40km south-east of Surat
- Denison exploration expertise combines with OGT’s nearby infrastructure
- Award marks Denison’s Taroom Trough entry and expands OGT’s regional position
Queensland gas producers Denison Gas and OGT Energy have secured highly prospective new acreage in the Taroom Trough, a potentially internationally significant oil and gas province. The 50-50 joint venture, with Denison as operator, has been granted ATP 2083 (Authority to Prospect), covering a 1,069 sq km block 40km south-east of Surat.

The acreage is prospective for gas, liquids and oil and adjoins OGT Energy’s existing gas processing and pipeline infrastructure on the western flank of the Taroom Trough. Together with Denison’s deep exploration expertise, this infrastructure provides the joint venture with a potential pathway to accelerate successful gas discoveries to the domestic market.
Denison Executive Chairman Dr Xingjin Wang said: “Denison has consistently found ways to bring more gas resources to market and we’re excited to bring our innovative approach to the Taroom Trough. Combined with OGT’s infrastructure and production expertise, this joint venture has the capability to move quickly from exploration success to new supply for the east coast of Australia.”
OGT Energy Chief Executive Officer Lucy Snelling said: “The Taroom Trough is one of Queensland’s most exciting exploration opportunities. For OGT, this acreage is a logical extension of what we are already doing in the region and, with Denison, provides an opportunity to unlock the next generation of Queensland gas and liquids resources.”
The joint venture plans to move quickly into drilling and seismic acquisition to target prospective conventional and tight sandstone gas resources. The new acreage is immediately north of OGT Energy’s operations, where recent exploration drilling discovered oil in the Waggamba area. The discoveries are further evidence of a prospective gas and liquids system along the western flank of the Taroom Trough.
Denison will lead exploration, applying experience gained from its successful conventional and tight-gas operations in the Denison Trough, including the recent 566 PJ resource discovery at Baffle Creek. OGT brings established production, processing and pipeline capability, and experience supplying gas, LPG and oil to the Australian domestic market.
